Easy Appliqué Blocks: 50 Designs in 5 Sizes - by Kay Mackenzie

This book of Kay's will soon be published by That Patchwork Place!

It will be shipped to quilt shops on March 9th and you will also be able to order signed copies through Kay's website beginning March 9th, too. It is available for pre-order at Amazon right now.

I have copies of all of Kay's books, so I just know this one is going to be another terrific book to add to our quilt libraries.

It comes with a CD, too! We'll be able to use it to print the blocks in any one of the 5 sizes included for each. There are even reversed versions for back-basting and machine appliqué! Very handy indeed!

Kay's book includes quite detailed instructions for freezer-paper-on-top preparation and back-basting preparation for hand appliqué. Information on stitching smooth curves, pointy points, and sharp notches by hand is also included as well as an overview of raw-edge fusible machine appliqué.

Visit Kay's website to read all about it. This is going to be a “Must Have” book for appliqué lovers and with its easy-to-sew pieces, a great book for beginning appliquérs!

The Inklingo™ Handbook - by Linda Franz

This review goes hand in hand with my review of the Inklingo™ Shape Collections which can be found below in the Tool Review. Be sure to read them both!

This Handbook is a great reference book for making quilts with any Inklingo Shape Collection of which there are 8 now, with many more to come! You can start with any collection, depending on the shapes and sizes you need, but Linda recommends the FREE download first, because it includes the first chapter of the Inklingo™ Handbook too!

The first three Inklingo™ Collections were published on CD (# 1, # 2, # 3) but since September, Inklingo™ Collections are downloads. So far, there are five with several shapes each: LeMoyne Star (free) (triangles and squares), The Jane Austen Patchwork (On sale! - Make an authentic replica!), 1.25 inch Grandmother's Flower Garden (GFG) (hexagons and related shapes), 0.5 inch for GFG, 0.5 inch for Seven Sisters (diamonds and related shapes).

There are 5 chapters included: Printing with Inklingo, Piecing with Inklingo. Appliqué with Inklingo (including the back-basting and needleturn methods) Pressing and Trimming, and Using Patterns with Inklingo.

Like all of Linda's books and work, it is extremely well done with wonderful colour photos and illustrations on just about every page - clear, well-written, complete directions - yardage calculations - and it has holes already punched in for placing in a binder for easy use and access. When I think of Linda, I think of quality and perfection! Her books and tools are a joy to own and use!

You can take a peek inside this Handbook and buy it on Linda's website. You can also download the free LeMoyne Star here. If my review isn't enough to convince you of how great Inklingo™ Shape Collections are, this free sample will!

Quilt Tools Review
Inklingo™ Shape Collection #3

When Linda produced Inklingo™ Shape Collection #1 and later, Inklingo™ Shape Collection #2, we quilters rejoiced at how much easier quilting became whether we piece by hand or by machine.

The reason for the rejoicing was, and is, that Inklingo makes things so simple! You need only print your desired shapes on your chosen fabric, layer the printed fabric over several others (depending upon how many you need) then cut out your shapes. No templates or special rulers are needed! You don't have to deal with stretchy bias seams, you don't need to copy or trace to size, nor do you need to draw lines on fabric or stitch on paper! Inklingo also saves on fabric! An added bonus is that you can cut with scissors if that is your preference.

Inklingo™ Shape Collection #3 includes 30 shapes and sizes. Hexagons, the triangles that go with them and related shapes such as Hexagon halves, quarters, thirds and star points. Elongated Hexagons are also included along with their related shapes - thirds, quarters, and halves. There are also triangles and their halves, and pentagons.

Inklingo only uses tiny amounts of inkjet ink and you can choose from 20 colours which will show up on the back of most any fabric. The inks can be allowed to fade or be washed out of the finished quilt. The shapes in Inklingo can be used with any quilt pattern that uses the same shapes and sizes.

Linda's books and tools are always of the best quality. Her books qualify as “eye candy” and they contain everything you need to know. The directions and illustrations are complete. Nothing is missing from them.

You will also appreciate the fact that there is a Yahoo Inklingo™ group which you can join to discuss Inklingo™ and your projects, and to ask questions. For those of you who are new to Inklingo Linda even has a demo video on her website. Click here to see Sample Pages of Inklingo # 3.

If you have Inklingo Shape Collection # 1 and # 2 you will be pleased to know that Linda is adding new Shape Collections quickly. To see the choices available, click here.

If you do not have them and would like them in book and CD form be sure to buy them right away because once Linda's current current inventory is sold, they will no longer be available. They will however, be replaced with smaller downloadable collections which are wonderful too and have many advantages. To state a few - they enable more choices to be made available, there is immediate delivery, there are no shipping costs, they contribute to the Greening of our planet, and they are compatible with both Macs and PCs. There is a summary PDF at the bottom of the page for each Shape Collection which is a very useful resource.

In the past three months Linda has published not only The Inklingo Handbook but also five more Shape Collections, all of which are available as downloads. The newest one is for the Jane Austen Patchwork Quilt which is on sale right now for only $25 - an introductory special! It was just published last week and there is a companion book that will be available in the New Year. Watch Linda's website for it!

Guidelines™ Connection Kit
Guidelines™ 4 Quilting has developed yet another great, handy tool for quilters!

With these special connectors, foldable fabric guide, and 2 Guidelines™ 6" x 12" rulers, we can quickly and easily create two more rulers - a 6" x 24" ruler and a 12" x 12" ruler! In effect we can make our rulers either twice as wide or twice as long. Very handy indeed - especially when travelling to and from quilt classes!

In the photo on the left, you can see the connector that is used to join two 6" x 12" rulers to make a 6" x 24" ruler. The larger connector is visible and so is the long, yellow fabric guide.

These yellow fabric guides are just one of my favourite benefits of the Guidelines™ rulers. I like being able to move them to the width needed, then butt it against the fabric's raw edge for a perfectly aligned cut which can be repeated quickly and accurately. No need to keep checking ruler measurements before each cut of the same size!

The photo on the right above shows the way two rulers are connected to make a 12" x 12" size. You can see how the smaller connectors are used to make it. With two rulers and the connector kit, you will have three ruler sizes!

Another bonus in using Guidelines™ rulers is that they are made of polycarbonate, so are virtually unbreakable - and they come with lifetime replacement guarantees!

Read more about the rulers and order them from the Guidelines™ 4 Quilting website!
